Dr. Cohen is a Professor and clinical psychologist. His research targets acute and chronic pain. In acute pain, Cohen examines interactions among children, their parents, and the medical staff via fine-grained behavioral analyses. These findings guide practical interventions to minimize children’s distress anxiety and pain associated with brief procedures. In chronic pain, Cohen conducts assessment and treatment research with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. For example, Cohen examines the benefits of shifting the patient’s focus and energy from pain control to engaging in values-based behavior. Cohen’s research program also involves other areas related to his graduate students’ interests and expertise.
